Technical SEO for UK small business websites
The crawl, index, speed and structured-data jobs that decide whether your service pages can rank — without an enterprise crawler theatre.
Technical SEO is often sold as a mystery. For most UK small business sites it is a short list: can Google find the important URLs, are there competing duplicates, is the template usable on a phone, and do redirects tell the truth?
Google publishes the reference material in its crawling and indexing documentation. You do not need a 200-page crawl PDF to start. You do need someone to fix what the documentation describes on your CMS.
Indexation before content volume
If a service page is noindexed, canonicalised to the homepage, or trapped behind a parameter, another blog post will not help. Check Search Console for coverage, then robots.txt and the XML sitemap. That is the first week of many SEO audits we run.
Core Web Vitals without the theatre
Core Web Vitals (largest contentful paint, interaction to next paint, cumulative layout shift) describe whether the page is pleasant to use. Compress hero images, lazy-load below-the-fold media, and stop loading marketing tags before consent. Field data in Search Console matters more than a lab screenshot of the homepage.
Internal links are a technical signal too
Crawlers discover pages through links. If your monthly SEO or Hampshire page is only in a footer after 12 other towns, it is not a priority in the site’s own architecture. Descriptive links from relevant articles and service pages help both users and Google. That work overlaps with on-page SEO.
Structured data when it is true
Schema.org markup for organisation, service, article, FAQ and breadcrumbs is useful when the visible content matches. Fake review stars and leftover product schema on a brochure site are a liability.
If you want this implemented rather than listed, our technical SEO service is built for SME templates — and it usually continues inside a monthly retainer so the next website release does not undo it.
